Induced Compton Scattering in Gigahertz Peak Spectrum Radio Sources
نویسندگان
چکیده
We revisit the shocked shell model for the class of Active Galactic Nuclei known as Gigahertz Peak Spectrum sources, incorporating new observational data on the radiation brightness temperatures. We argue that in addition to free–free absorption, induced Compton scattering will also have an important effect in forming the ∼ GHz peak and in shaping the radio spectra that characterize these sources. Indeed, our arguments suggest that GPS sources may provide the first real evidence for the role of induced Compton scattering in extragalactic radio sources. Radio spectra of Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum radio sources
Awell defined sample of 72 Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum radio sources is compiled, having turnover frequencies in the range of 0.5 – 10 GHz. Using this sample, the canonical GPS radio spectrum is constructed, which is found to have a constant shape, independent of AGN type, redshift or radio luminosity. A possible deficiency of low turnover frequencies at high redshift is found, which may reflect ...
متن کاملThe host galaxies of Compact Steep Spectrum and Gigahertz-Peaked Spectrum radio sources
I will review some of the developments in studies of the host galaxy properties of Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and GigaHertz-Peaked Spectrum (GPS) radio sources. In contrast to previous reviews structured around observational technique, I will discuss the host galaxy properties in terms of morphology, stellar content and warm gas properties and discuss how compact, young radio-loud AGN are key...
متن کاملOn the lives of extra-galactic radio sources: the first 100,000 years
In this paper we discuss the early phase of radio source evolution as represented by Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) and Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) radio sources. Correlations between their spectral peak and angular size strongly suggest that the spectral turnovers are caused by synchrotron self absorption, and indicate that young radio sources evolve in a self similar way. We argue that the ...
متن کاملUnfolding X-ray spectrum in the diagnostic range using the Monte Carlo Code MCNP5
Introduction: Unfolding X-ray spectrum is a powerful tool for quality control of X-ray tubes. Generally, the acquisition of the X-ray spectrum in diagnostic radiology departments is complicated and difficult due to high photon flux. Measurement of x ray spectra using radiation detectors could not be performed accurately, because of the pulse pile up. Therefore, indirect methods...
متن کاملAn unbiased sample of bright southern Compact Steep Spectrum and Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum Sources
Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Gigahertz Peaked Spectrum (GPS) sources are classes of compact, powerful, extragalactic objects. These sources are thought to be the earliest stages in the evolution of radio galaxies, capturing the ignition (or, in some cases, re-ignition) of the AGN. As well as serving as probes of the early stages of large-scale radio sources, these sources are good, stable, ...
